Queens Gallantry Medal Miniature Naval General Service Insitutued in 1854 this medalInstituted on 20th June 1974 to reward acts of exemplary bravery. Although intended as primarily a civilian award it is more often awarded to Military personnel for actions where military decorations would not be appropriate. Awards of the gallantry emblem to the Order of the British Empire were ceased at this time with the intention that such acts would be rewarded with the QGM. To date just over 1000 awards have been made together with 18 bars.
