The carriers hold the rear stub axles and their bearings, setting rear wheel alignment. Aluminum resists the spreading that composite carriers suffer under repeated hard landings once a carrier has opened up even slightly the bearings sit crooked, which you feel as drag and hear as a rumble, and it eats bearings steadily until corrected.
