This car has a bit of an interesting history. Originally, Lionel made the 1976 Northern Pacific Service Station Special set with a 9177 NP Caboose in prototypical green and yellow markings. However, many collectors complained that it did not match the 8666 GP 9 Locomotive, so Lionel made the 9268 the following year as an add on to the set to match the engine.
